First of all, it’s always a good idea to dress appropriately. Overdressing is much better than under-dressing. While some jobs may not mind if you walk in wearing jeans and a T-Shirt, it’s still a good idea to go in with some nice dress pants and a dress shirt, with shoes to match. Your first impression is the most important one and if you appear businesslike from the get-go everything you say is going to be taken much more seriously. No one knows yourself like you do. You’ve accomplished many things in your life, no matter how big or small and you have made it this far in life. Now’s the next step; landing that job. Whether it’s the ‘perfect job’ or just a job to help you stay afloat for the time being, treat your interview the same. You’ve already been through the whole process, applying for the job; sharing your previous experience and waiting patiently for the interview. As you prepare for the big day, there are a few things that will help you leave a lasting impression.

Let your personality shine from the instant you walk through that door. Even if you are nervous, smile at those who walk by you and keep your mind on positive thoughts. Think about how lovely the weather is or how excited you are for this weekend. While this may seem off-topic, it’s actually going to ease your mind and help you be true to yourself. Also, think about things you are proud of yourself for, like how you won that soccer game last year, or when you went out of your way to help a friend in need. All this thoughts blend together, giving you a confident exterior as well as a relaxed interior.

As the interview begins, be sure to give a firm handshake; looking your possible future employer in the eyes with a nice smile. Eye contact shows confidence, as does the right handshake. Even though you have yet to say a word; a second impression is already being made (clothing being the first).
During the interview, think through each question and try not to rush. If a question is tough, let the interviewer know by saying something like, “That’s a tough one…” giving yourself a few more seconds to think. When you’re in the interview, the thoughts are going to flow much better than you expect because you’ve prepped yourself for this.

You know your accomplishments better than anyone else. You know what you’re good at and even in the areas you struggle, you’ve figured out a way to express them in a good way or mention them saying they are things you are working on to become a better person overall. Integrity coupled with a great personality on top of your thought out appearance is going to leave an impression. While this may not always get you the job, it is going to greatly increase your chances. Keep in mind, rejection is an important lesson of experience not to be feared, and practice makes perfect.

Can you imagine what it must be like for a hiring manager; going through application after application, and a lot of the time coming up short? Many people simply don’t know how to act business-like, dressing inappropriately or speaking in a way that cannot be tolerated at a business. Interviewing person after person, everyone starts to blend together and all you want is someone who you think will represent the company accurately and respectfully.

You’re not those other people. You know how to dress, you know what to say and you know you have the experience it takes to get the job done in a way that will make the company gleam with pride. So, why is it you can’t seem to get those calls back? One of the main reasons people don’t get a call back is because they’ve only done the basics. They’ve let themselves become that application that blends in with the rest. With so many applications coming in on a constant basis, companies don’t have time to go through them all much of the time; leaving quality employees left unheard.

Don’t become one of those applications that blends into the pile, by putting yourself out there. It may sound a bit intimidating, but selling yourself is what finding a job is all about. Call the business you are applying for and see if you can set up an appointment to talk with the manager; whether in person or on the phone. If the company you are applying for has a customer service desk, asking them would be the best first step.

Once you set up the appointment, start preparing yourself. Think about what the company stands for and what they want in their employees. Come up with situations, whether you’ve worked a (similar) job before or not; where you showed leadership and commitment in ways that can relate to this specific job. These types of things are good to keep in mind because you never know what you may be asked and it will help pump yourself up and feel good about the things you’ve accomplished. Keeping these things at the forefront of your mind will help you sell yourself much better.

When you get to talk to the manager, let them know that you understand they are very busy but you wanted to let them know that you are a great candidate for the job and would be willing to start right away. Keep things simple and to the point since this may not exactly be an interview; more like a pre-interview that could lead you to getting hired. Let your colors shine and say you are willing to learn, and take on any responsibilities that may come your way in order to get the job; without sounding desperate.

Make the company feel that they need you, not the other way around, and you are in the right direction to getting the job you desire. Even if this isn’t the job of your dreams, it’s one step closer to getting there. Keep your goals in the forefront of your mind and it will keep you on track when it comes to your future and staying on track. Remember to emphasize what you can bring to the company, every human resources manager doing interviews is looking to pick the person that will bring the most to offer the company and it’s goals. Doing some research on the company itself, it’s history and it’s people is a great way to come with a verbal arsenal to keep any prospective employer impressed. Most of all, remember to breathe.
